According to this story, Michaels Crafts and Big Lots have agreed to stop selling children’s jewelry which contains lead. Have agreed is the wording that got my attention. It apparently took the threat of legal action to get them to act. Doesn’t anyone in these businesses have a conscience? We abhorr child labor in other countries and then companies like these slowly poison our children and they keep doing it after they know what is going on. It’s shameful. It’s inexcusible. See this article for the latest on lead and our children. It shows lead levels far below the government’s standards still cause problems. My daughter owns bunches of inexpensive jewelry purchased at well-known retailers. I’m looking at that jewelry in a whole new light and wondering if I should throw it all out and start over. Sterling silver from local artisans is looking pretty good right now. Here is an article explaining what metals contain lead. Oh, and that coupon Michaels sent me, I think it will go unused.
